Florida State University,
Semiconductor Hall magnetometry is an ultra-sensitive magnetic measurement technique with broad temperature and magnetic field operation ranges, which promises a wide variety of applications. In this talk I will review our effort in the optimization of micro-Hall magnetometers based on high-mobility semiconductor heterostructures through systematic miniaturization and detailed noise studies. Magnetic moment sensitivity better than 104 mB/Hz1/2 is demonstrated. Results of magnetic measurements on individual Fe nanoparticles as small as 5 nm with GaAs/AlGaAs devices [1] and room-temperature detection of a single superparamagnetic bead with InAs quantum wells [2] will be presented. The implementation of magnetic detection of DNA and proteins with InAs micro-Hall devices and superparamagnetic labels will be described.
